History says don't hope

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.  My goal here is to observe history in the past and in the making; to provide some insight for myself and others on this crazy world; and to write it down as a narrative that may be scary but also beautiful. My hope is that the tidal wave of justice will rise up; that hope and history will rhyme. Or, as Howard Zinn said, that we may send "this spinning top of a world in a different direction."
